THE NHI BILL
SIGNED INTO LAW
President Cyril Ramaphosa signed the National Health Insurance (NHI) Bill into law on 15 May 2024.
WHAT IS THE NHI BILL
NHI is a system that has been created to finance and provide equitable universal access to quality healthcare for all South African citizens regardless of their income or social status.
This means South African citizens will have access to healthcare services, facilities and professionals in both the private and public sector.
HOW WILL THE NHI BE FUNDED
The government will raise the funds through taxes by:
•Implementing a new tax on payroll for the working class and
•Increasing the tax percentage on personal income tax.
DOES THE NHI REPLACE MEDICAL AID SCHEMES IN SOUTH AFRICA?
Although medical aid Schemes will not be replaced by the NHI in South Africa, the government aims to shrink the number of services offered by medical aid Schemes once particular services become available on the NHI.
Once particular services are available on the NHI, medical aid schemes will no longer be allowed to reimburse their clients for those services.
oMedical Aid Scheme members will have the right to continue with their medical aid schemes if they still wish to.
